Work starts on £3.5m new care centre in Glasgow
WORK has begun on a new £3.5million centre in Glasgow for dementia sufferers and their carers. It will provide accommodation for 17 residents in Govanhill and is expected to be ready by summer next year.
The new centre, which is being built on a gap site in Bankhall Street, is a collaboration between Govanhill Housing Association, care provider the Mungo Foundation and Glasgow City Council’s social work services department.
The plan is for a five-storey building with 17 residents’ rooms, communal areas, kitchen facilities and a roof garden.
Janice McEwan, chairwoman of Govanhill Housing Association’s management committee, said: “There is a huge demand for this type of facility in the area and it will allow people diagnosed with dementia the care they desperately need and deserve.”
Dana O’Dwyer, chief executive of the Mungo Foundation, said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with Govanhill Housing Association and Glasgow City Council on such an exciting and innovative service as the Bankhall Street development.
“This service has been designed within a tenement-style building so it can be part of the Govanhill community, and provide local, high-quality, specialised care services for people with dementia and their carers.
“The Mungo Foundation’s specially trained care staff will do everything to ensure it’s a success and that Bankhall Street is a home in the truest sense of the word.”
Govanhill Housing Association is a charitable organisation working to regenerate the south side of Glasgow. It was set up in 1975.
