Nurse Crisis Cuts At Aberdeen Children’s Unit

A nursing shortage is causing a high dependency unit at Aberdeen Children’s Hospital to close for two months.

The unit has four beds caring for very ill children. From Tuesday they will be relocated to a medical ward. NHS Grampian said it would continue to provide appropriate levels of patient care at the hospital.

A recruitment drive will try to persuade suitably-qualified staff to return to work to plug the gap in paediatric nurses in the region.

The hospital said the reconfiguration of services was being done to maintain a high level of patient care. Staff are working extra shifts to minimise the impact of the vacancies.

It is thought the unit will be in its temporary home from between six to eight weeks.
