Critics Slam HIV Merger
A merger to form the UK’s biggest HIV charity has been branded ‘secretive’ by Scots rivals who claim the new charity has a history of aggressive business tactics. Terrence Higgins Trust (THT), one of the biggest HIV charities in England and Wales, this week announced a merger with Glasgow-based PHACE Scotland to create THT Scotland. However, Scots charities who have been engaging in talks to create a single Scottish national charity say it could have a negative impact on the life-styles of people with HIV in Scotland.
The sector is angry that the announcement was made just 24-hours after talks between PHACE Scotland and east of Scotland-based Waverley Care broke down.
Both THT and PHACE Scotland this week said the merger was the best move for people with HIV in Scotland, claiming the decision as “an open and shut case”.
Several other top charities, including HIV Scotland and Gay Men’s Health, who were also involved in talks up until a fortnight ago, say that PHACE Scotland told them a merger with THT, which was originally discussed a year ago, would not take place.
