Councillors unite in civic tribute to ‘astonishing’ Pat Martinez–Williams

EMOTIONAL tributes to a “community champion” flowed in the St Helens Council chamber prior to the funeral of widely respected Councillor Pat Martinez–Williams.

The mother-of-two, who died aged 66 following a long illness, had served the local authority in various periods since 1995.

Ahead of a civic funeral, Council Leader Marie Rimmer led the tributes to her Labour colleague, saying: “I remember first meeting Pat on May 4, 1995 at Windle Labour Club.

“I saw this astonishing woman with a mobile strapped to her waistband – the atmosphere was electric.

“Pat was generating so much energy and commitment, she was amazing. Pat was brave and courageous and had a strong sense of justice.

“Always true to herself she championed social services for children and adults and served on countless committees with great knowledge and experience.”

Pat represented the Windle ward from 1995 -2003, Thatto Heath ward between 2007 and 2011 and Windle again from 2011.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Councillor Steph Topping added: “Pat was a valued councillor and always had a ready smile and friendly word.

“She was a people person and very passionate about her work for her constituents and St Helens in general. She will be sadly missed.”

Mayor of St Helens, Councillor Geoff Almond, highlighted Pat’s commitment to women and children’s services and said it was fitting that her funeral should be held on International Women’s Day.

Pat leaves a husband Martyn and two children, Philip and Rebecca.

Following the meeting a civic funeral took place at St Thomas of Canterbury RC Church.
