Care homes mark Dignity in Action Day across the UK
Today is Dignity in Action Day, a date that many health and social care professionals choose to mark by organising memorable events for care service users.
Activities and entertainments are being organised all over the country, as part of the campaign to promote respect for older and vulnerable adults who rely upon carers to achieve a dignified lifestyle.
Ashcroft Nursing Home, in Margate, is one care home to embrace this opportunity, organising its own Afternoon Tea Party to help raise awareness.
Fiona Newton, who is a registered ‘Dignity Champion’ at the home, describes the scene: “We like to organise a civilised and dignified event each year where everyone gets to enjoy an upmarket afternoon tea, whilst listening to live music and learning about the importance of Dignity in Care. We decorate the lounge area with white ribbons and fresh flowers, and we serve everyone on posh china plates with dollies on trollies! Everyone loves it, and we get to raise awareness about this important day.”
Other Regal Care Trading Ltd homes to be hosting events today include Westlands Rest Home, in Wellingborough, which is putting on a talent show and entertaining residents with the performance of old-time musical songs; along with Ashley Court, in Kettering, which is having a day devoted to ‘Wedding Day Memories’, giving occupants a chance to share photos and stories of nostalgia with each other.
SheffCare Ltd are another provider with residential homes marking Dignity in Action Day, with examples of events that residents will be taking part in today including pamper days, and coffee and cake mornings. Those involved will also be debating what dignity means to those in care and placing their thoughts onto a ‘dignity tree’.
Chief executive Belinda Gibson is pleased to see carers embrace this day for their residents, saying: “We are delighted that our homes are supporting National Dignity Action Day. At Sheffcare we know that all our residents are treated with dignity and consideration every day.
“Our homes are their homes and it is the aim of every Sheffcare team member to ensure our residents enjoy a full and happy life with us.”
