£3.5m care home set to open by summer creating 60 new jobs

A multi-million pound care home will be ready to open this summer. The Kapil Care Homes facility on Old Brumby Street, Scunthorpe, is now weather-tight and progress is being made on the inside.

When complete, the £3.5 million project will include 62 bedrooms and will create 60 jobs.

Sunil Kapil, managing director of Kapil Care Homes, said he was pleased with the progress being made on the building.

And he said he had started making preparations for its opening.

He said: “We are still working to programme and looking to have the building registered and complete to open the doors in July.

“We are now having to make choices in terms of furnishings and equipment, which we are on with at the moment.

“The emphasis has been on the building work and the environment but as we get closer to our projected opening date, it is to do with staffing plans, furnishings and all of the different types of equipment we are going to need to buy.

“We are making choices and taking advice from the relevant authorities where necessary. We will be starting general recruitment in May, when we will be advertising for staff. We are getting one or two inquiries for positions at the moment, which is great, and we are looking forward to getting people lined up and ready to work.”

Mr Kapil said the main focus of activity was now on the inside of the building, which is on the site formerly occupied by St Andrew’s Church.

He said: “The plasterers have been in since the beginning of the year and that means when they are plastering, all of the things that go behind that, like wiring and pipes, are all in situ.

“That is a pretty big step forward.

“All of the trades are in there now and there are a lot of people on site, trying to make sure they keep to the timescale.”

The building is being constructed by the Yaddlethorpe-based GS Kelsey contractor, with design services provided by CR Parrott Consultants, from Scunthorpe.

Mr Kapil said he was happy with the work done by both firms and pleased to be able to provide opportunities for local companies.

He said: “I am very happy with how it has gone.

“We are very pleased with the choice of contractor and architect we made.

“They are both Scunthorpe firms, the sub-contractors are all North Lincolnshire contractors and we remain very pleased with the choices we made.”

When complete, the building will add to Scunthorpe-based Kapil’s other care homes in the town, at Carisbrooke Manor and Ascot House.

St Andrew’s Church was demolished in 2010 after planning permission for the care home was granted by North Lincolnshire Council.
