Children’s commissioner consults young people on commercialisation of childhood

The Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England has launched a survey developed by children and young people to examine the issue of the commercialisation of childhood.

The children and young people’s advisory group, which is made up of 19 young people aged eight to 18 is looking at the topic and is aiming to gather the views of children and young people across England.

A questionnaire was devised by the group to attempt to find out the sorts of things children and young people want to own and why.

The group will report the findings to Reg Bailey’s review of commercialisation and sexualisation of childhood.

Fifteen-year-old Lysette Wilks, chair of the advisory group, said: “Finally a chance to say what you have to say and know that someone is listening, an interesting topic – and an easy chance to make a difference. This is the perfect opportunity to let the government know how you feel.”

The deadline for completing the survey is Friday 28 January.A questionnaire was devised by the group to attempt to find out the sorts of things children and young people want to own and why.
