Carer denies assaulting children at Haute de la Garenne

A house parent at the former Haut de la Garenne children’s home in Jersey has denied she assaulted children who were in her care.

Morag Jordan, 62, from Kirriemuir, Angus, was giving evidence at her trial where she denies all charges.

Mrs Jordan, who worked at the home from 1970 to 1984, is accused of 36 counts of common assault involving 11 children aged between one and 17.

She told the court she only gave children a light smack as discipline.

She said any other action had to be decided by senior staff.

She is accused of forcing soap into children’s mouths, pushing their faces into urine and hitting them with a wooden spoon.

The trial continues.
