GSCC Welcomes Report On Elder Abuse

The General Social Care Council has welcomed the DoH and Comic Relief report ‘UK Study of Abuse and Neglect of Older People’. The report said that 13% of older people were mistreated by care workers in the past year and ‘relatively little mistreatment was carried out by care workers’ compared with mistreatment by partners and family members.

Rodney Brooke, Chair, GSCC said: “Extending the benefits of the Social Care Register to include domiciliary care workers and their managers, is a move that will help safeguard vulnerable older people in their homes.

“The registration of these groups of social care workers will increase the public’s confidence in the social care sector through the accountability of a trained and trusted workforce. The GSCC is committed to regulating the social care workforce, ensuring high standards of care by promoting and facilitating ongoing training and learning, and enforcing accountability and compliance with the codes of practice.”

The Social Care Register is expected to commence for domiciliary care workers and their managers early in 2008.
