NSPCC Responds To Sir Ian Blair On ‘Children Involved With Gangs’
NSPCC director Dame Mary Marsh said: “We welcome Sir Ian Blair’s recognition that children involved in gangs often come from very troubled or unhappy backgrounds and need help from social services, but we would add help from other organisations too.
“We must address the needs and problems that are pushing them into the arms of gangs by carrying out an assessment of their family situation. If they are found to be at risk of harm they should get the help they need to keep them safe.
“If a child is at immediate risk the only course of action is to place them in care. However, the current care system does not have the resources to cope with all of the children who have anti-social or offending behaviours.
“These young people need specialist counselling to address their behaviour, teach them about appropriate and inappropriate relationships and provide them with the tools to change, grow and fulfil their potential. Without it they may harm children they come into contact with in the care system, especially those who are particularly vulnerable because of serious mental health needs.”
