Philanthropist J P McManus Pays Tribute To Unsung Carers

One of Ireland’s richest men has paid tribute to the thousands of carers and people who give up their time for others.

Multi-millionaire racing tycoon JP McManus said yesterday there were scores of people who looked after the elderly, sick and handicapped, without whom “we wouldn’t have a society”.

Mr McManus, who was named Irish Philanthropist of the Year, said he was accepting the award from the Community Foundation for Ireland on behalf of the people who did not get thanked for their contribution.

The multi-millionaire was given the award for his support of charities in Ireland, especially in his native Limerick.

Niall Mellon was also given an award for his work building houses for the homeless in South Africa.

The (Niall Mellon) Township Trust has built over 4,300 homes in Cape Town and brings over volunteers every year. Mr Mellon was named as the international philanthropist of the year.

The inaugural philanthropy awards were attended by judges Eamon Coghlan and author Conor O’Clery at the event in Dublin city centre.

Mr Mellon accepted his award on behalf of the volunteers who travelled to South Africa to help his charity.
