Boris Johnson ‘advancing plans’ to fix the ‘huge issue’ of social care

Boris Johnson has suggested a cross-party approach may be needed to deal with the “huge issue” of social care.

The Prime Minister – who used his first speech in office to promise to deal with the problem “once and for all” – said he would set out his plans “in due course”, but did not give a timetable.

“Social care is a huge issue facing this country,” he told reporters at the G7 summit in Biarritz.

“We do have to address it. We are working very hard on it.

“In an ideal world, we would bring parties together across the political divide and get a consensus on it, because it is so difficult.

“We will be advancing plans in due course that satisfy two criteria – nobody should be forced to sell their home, and everybody should have dignity and security in old age.”

Mr Johnson claimed he had a plan prepared to deal with the issue when he first became Prime Minister.

In his speech in Downing Street in July, he said: “We will fix the crisis in social care once and for all with a clear plan we have prepared – to give every older person the dignity and security they deserve.”
