Author to give insight in common misgivings about poverty at talk in Dundee

Glaswegian rap artist and author of ‘Poverty Safari’ will share his insight into living on the breadline next week when he talks at the University of Dundee.

Darren ‘Loki’ McGarvey, will be giving his insight into the common misgivings about poverty and those who live in it, from 12pm – 1pm on Tuesday 27 March at the University’s Dalhousie Building, 3F01.

He said: “A lot of news these days leaves people scratching their heads, most of us are guilty of misunderstanding poverty and how people on lower incomes interpret the world so I wanted to write a book which accurately reflected people from these kinds of backgrounds.

“Where you are on the left or right of politics is almost irrelevant, it’s only by understanding the physiological experience of poverty that you begin to form a more accurate profile of the pockets of society who have become disengaged or have become hostile. This is something my talk will address.”

Donna Dey, Lecturer from the School of Education, Social Work and Community Education at the University, said: “Darren offers a real insight into the life of families living in poverty. He challenges everyone to confront the ways in which the education system often excludes young people who are living with the consequences of systemic inequality.

“Gaining an appreciation of these issues is crucial for our students if they are to learn how to transform their teaching practice. Join us next week to be inspired.” 

The event is free to attend and everyone is welcome, however, seats are limited so booking in advance is recommended.
