Webwatch: Get savvy about social media with new online course

The web offers tools to help you find information, learn new skills and build new connections. If you want to build on continuing professional development, understanding the web (including social media) is really important. And it can save time.

Iriss has recently launched a free ‘Grow your Personal Learning Networks’ online course for social services staff, who want to learn more about social media and how it can improve their practice.

Growing your personal learning network is all about making the most of the web to grow who you know and what you know, and will give you tools to do things faster and more effectively. Learning, sharing and connecting are even more important in the world of health and social care integration.

The course is designed to be undertaken over six weeks, but at a time and pace that suits the individual. For each of the six weeks there are a range of activities, including audio and video content and external reading. Participants are invited to work through these activities at a pace that best suits them and which fits with their workload. They can determine when they want to complete each week’s activities – register and complete activities in consecutive weeks or choose to break it up over a longer or shorter period.

On completion participants will:

• Better understand what a Personal Learning Network is all about
• Gain practical skills and experience using social media to keep up to date
• Build confidence using social media
• Have tools to support practice and work more effectively
• Have tools and networks to come up with new ideas and support others more creatively
• Grow a network of people to share with and learn from
• Be able to apply for an Open Badge through the Scottish Social Services Council. An Open Badge is a digital record of achievement and learning.
