CF Children, Education and Justice Services
Social Worker – Social Care Direct
Waverley Court
Salary: £37,626 – £44,257
Hours: 36 per week
Social Care Direct is the first point of contact for children, families and professionals seeking a social work service. Social Care Direct also manages requests for information from other professionals and partner agencies. Referrals are assessed by Professional Advisers who will recommend and implement initial social work interventions, through a screening process.
Social Care Direct has expanded to provide a direct service to children and their families who require support. The Team works with Children in Need, who are not subject to Child Protection Investigations, or statutory measure of care.
As part of an exciting and new development, the City of Edinburgh has received funding from the Whole Family Wellbeing Fund to drive transformational change across the city for children and their families. The Edinburgh Family Support Partnership is a collaboration between City of Edinburgh Council, Children and Families Social Work, Children 1st, Barnardo’s, The Citadel Youth Centre, Edinburgh Community Food and Safe Families.
The aim of the collaboration is to develop multi-disciplinary, community- based teams in each of the four localities across the city. We aim to address the “missing middle” between universal and statutory services, offering reflective, whole family support, which is empowering, relationship-based, rooted in GIRFEC and which builds upon existing universal services.
A key element of this innovative project is to develop and embed a Community Social Work approach which enables social workers to be present, visible and accessible within communities. We will work alongside families using asset and strength-based approaches to build individual, family and community capacity.
Social Care Direct is seeking to recruit, creative, motivated and dynamic social workers to work in partnership with the Edinburgh Family Support Partnership within communities, providing an early intervention and prevention approach with children, young people and their families.
All applicants will be able to evidence clear assessment skills using current research and models of practice; excellent communication skills with children, families and other professionals, both written and verbal; resilience to work and achieve positive outcomes in what is a fast-paced environment; willingness to develop services ensuring best practice.
Interviews will be held on Tuesday 19th and Thursday 21st November. Please note all the posts will be recruited to on a permanent basis but team placement may be subject to change following the City of Edinburgh Children’s Services Re-Design.

We’re committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.
As part of our goal to improve our organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure that we’re bringing the best people into our roles, not just in their skills and experience but also in their approach to work.
To help achieve this, we’re changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. This new way of interviewing will allow us to assess how you think and how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility into your ways of working.
