Practice Teaching and Development Officers (16/852)
Dumfries
(1) You will be required to work 36 hours per week, 52.14 weeks per year.
£37,533 – £40,236
Practice Teaching and Development Officers (PTDO) are responsible for the delivery of practice teaching/learning and the support of professional, degree level social work education. They support social work degree students, and colleagues working towards the qualification in Practice Development and Practice Learning (PDAPL), liaising with colleagues in universities, and in the council, its partners, and Third Sector organisations, to provide and support practice placements. They also provide a support programme for Newly Qualified Social Workers and are involved in promoting careers in social work.
This is an opportunity for qualified and experienced practice teachers to join the team on a permanent basis, at a time when we require a flexible and creative approach to supporting social work degree students in professional practice placements.
You will be directly responsible for practice teaching several students in our student unit model and in placements across the region, and work with team colleagues to organise and support Practice Teaching within Social Work Services and partner agencies.
Applicants must have a recognised Social Work qualification, a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a social work practitioner and have experience as a Practice Teacher. You should also be educated to degree level, have a Post Qualifying Award in Social Work- Practice Teaching (PDAPL) and be able to evidence continuous professional development throughout your career.
We’re looking for a reflective practitioner with ability to analyse and evaluate their own practice and to support others to do this too. Experience of offering learning and development opportunities in a range of social work settings and the ability to demonstrate understanding of theories and models of learning is required.
You need to have good organisational skills and be a confident communicator with strong negotiation skills, and the ability to work in partnership and collaboration with others, dealing with conflict where necessary.
This will require presentation skills and IT literacy, and the ability to use a range of ICT equipment.
You must be focussed on the outcomes for people who use services and their carers and be capable of motivating and leading others to do likewise.
This will require you to demonstrate professional autonomy and the ability to work in an anti-oppressive manner, while working as part of a team within professional governance frameworks.
Knowledge of current social work policy and national context in at least one of the following is required: children and families; adult care or criminal justice, and an understanding of best practice in social work and how this can be developed and supported.
You will also be aware of developments in Practice Teaching and Learning at a national level and understand the changes and developments in Social Work Education and their impact on practice/practitioners and managers, demonstrating knowledge of the standards and competencies for Social Work education and how these are assessed.
You should also have some knowledge and understanding of practice improvement and quality assurance.
The Practice Teaching and Development Officer must be able to work as part of the Social Work Improvement and Quality Team and have a “can do” approach with a willingness to take responsibility and show initiative within their own role and this wider agenda.
You must be willing and able to travel across and outside the region as necessary.
