Focal Point Gallery (FPG) is a small, locally focused arts organisation with a large international reach and ambition. Since 1990, the gallery has developed from a corner of the former library building to a front facing, accredited and nationally regarded visual arts institution.
Our mission is to serve artists, by commissioning and presenting new and recent contemporary work that is relevant and thought-provoking, and through our role in championing cultural regeneration and investment to support the creative industries in our region.
In parallel we are here to serve local residents & communities by providing them access to quality, exciting art, and creating opportunities for them to develop their own creative skills and thinking.
Your new role
Focal Point Gallery are looking to recruit a permanent Curator to play a key role in developing and delivering Focal Point Gallery’s programme of exhibitions, public and digital art commissions, and events that support artists to produce and present high quality contemporary art, which engage a wide range of local residents and visiting audiences.
This role has dedicated responsibility for curating and delivering the regular programme of artists’ moving image and films, commissions and community projects for Big Screen Southend in Elmer Square as well as to developing high quality content for social media and the FPG website.
This position is 29.6hrs per week, 4 days a week.
There are no set days, but you will need some flexibility to cover ad-hoc evenings or weekends.

What you’ll need to succeed
To be successful in this position, you need to be a diligent, organised and self-motivated individual, who has a passion for contemporary art that offers enjoyment, learning and inspiration for all. Strong research, organisation and project management skills are essential and ideally gained from working contemporary art exhibitions and film programmes. Working within a small and enthusiastic team, this role will require you to be adaptable and willing to take on a range of tasks, including some communication responsibilities and occasional out of hours working, for example, to supervise installations of artwork works or deliver events.
