Renfrewshire Council has, since the beginning of 2020, been working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support delivering a new service called ‘Improving the Cancer Journey’ (ICJ). We have an exciting opportunity for a new staff member to work for a fixed term of 12 months commencing in November/December 2021 providing maternity leave cover for one of the two ICJ coordinators.
We recognise that a cancer diagnosis can come with a wide and worrying range of potential impacts beyond the purely physical. These challenges include financial, housing, mobility, phycological/emotional, spiritual, relationships and getting access to the full range of NHS services available. Trying to navigate through the many public and voluntary sector organisations who can help those affected by cancer can be difficult at any time however, it is especially so when dealing with the shock and impact of a cancer diagnosis. The aim of the ICJ Service is therefore to provide immediate access to expert information, advice and support to people affected by cancer.
You will work in a ‘Macmillan Professional’ branded role. Your core task will be to meet remotely or in-person with Renfrewshire residents who have received a cancer diagnosis in order to carry out a Holistic Needs Assessment and to develop an Individual Care Plan tailored to their specific needs. These meetings will take place either online or in a variety of locations within the local community, ranging from a hospital ward, through to a favourite café or local library, or even the person’s own home. The specific arrangements will be driven by the needs of the client and the Covid guidance applicable at the time. At this meeting you will offer advice, provide leaflets and information specific to the client’s needs, and identify what services would be of the greatest benefit. Following the meeting, you will make referrals to partner agencies in line with the Individual Care Plan you have developed. Follow-up reviews will then take place over a period to ensure that the services provided by yourself and other agencies are delivering the anticipated positive impact and to determine what additional services may be required.
You will be required to have experience of supporting people who have a long-term health condition in either a personal or professional capacity. You will have previous experience of dealing with the public and engaging with public sector, voluntary or other statutory agencies. You must have the ability to effectively assess the needs of individuals who may be in crisis and engage effectively, sensitively and flexibly, with a commitment to developing a reactive and supportive service. You will have people skills in relation to communication, listening, supporting, motivating and counselling. You will understand the support needs of people who have cancer or who are supporting someone living with cancer, and have the advocacy skills needed to help deliver support services to them. You will have the ability to plan, organise and prioritise work, meet deadlines, assimilate complex information, produce written reports and maintain client records through input to IT systems.
You will promote and advocate for the service wherever possible. You will have an enthusiastic and positive manner and be able to manage difficult interactions in a respectful, supportive and non-judgemental manner. You will have a high level of self-motivation and self-awareness, and be proactive, flexible, responsive and with the ability to embrace and positively influence change.
It is desirable that you have an Appropriate qualification in social care, welfare law and/or welfare benefits.
