The Additional Family/Youth Support Service – Family Support (AFYSS – FS) aims to provide support to families and keep children and young people safe, at home and within their own communities wherever possible. AFYSS – FS looks to deliver a holistic response, in keeping with the principles of “Getting it Right For every Child” that is speedy, appropriate, and proportionate.
As a Family Support Worker, you will require to be flexible in your response to working with children and families and be able to respond to need and crisis situations as they arise. You will be involved in progressing the Child’s Plan as a member of a “team around the child” approach and will undertake various duties as directed by Family Support Co-ordinator i.e., supporting contact arrangements, assisting children to return to their parents or remain at home where appropriate etc. A Qualification related to childcare/health/social care such as Nursing, NNEB, HNC/SVQ etc is desirable for this role however, it is essential that you possess experience of working with people in need, including children and families and have experience of providing coaching and support to parents. Previous experience of working in a Social Work/Childcare setting is desirable. Cases referred to AFYSS – Family Support fall between 0 – 18 years and you will be expected to contribute to care planning/risk management. This post will also involve working with other relevant partner agencies, possibly within multi-disciplinary settings.
It is essential that you have effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a positive, friendly, approachable manner and be able to work on your own as well as part of a team. You will effective organisational skills with demonstrable assessment and writing skills with the ability to us your own initiative. The ability to manage situations where conflict may arise is essential. Pro social modelling and advocacy are a large part of this role. You must have experience of using IT systems and it would be desirable that you have knowledge and/or experience of Swift, CCM or equivalent systems. It is essential that you have a sound basic understanding of values in social care and an understanding of accountability. You must be able to use your own initiative and have a willingness to learn and develop in this role.
A flexible approach is required as you may be required to respond at short notice to requests for support to children and families in crisis. This post is 37hrs per week – 5 over 7 therefore it is essential that you are able to work evenings and weekends. Driving licence and use of own transport is desirable.
