Rise to the top with an Apprenticeship in healthcare sector

The ninth annual National Apprenticeship Week is underway and hundreds of events taking place across England to celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, organisations and the economy.

Coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service, the overarching theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2016 is ‘Rise to the top!’, highlighting the progression opportunities apprenticeships offer, from traineeships right through to higher and degree apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships enable young people and adults to earn while they learn, gaining a nationally recognised qualification and improved prospects for the future. Research from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills found that after finishing, the majority of apprentices (90%) will stay in employment (including 2% self-employed), with seven in ten (71%) staying with the same employer.

A quarter of former apprentices had received a promotion (23%) within 12 months of finishing, and for intermediate and advance apprentices, three quarters reported taking on more responsibility in their job after completing their apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships in the healthcare sector

In the health sector, employers are using apprenticeships to attract new talent, reskill existing staff and tackle skill shortages. Their apprentices work in a wide variety of roles, from business administration, perioperative support and pharmacy services, to customer service, horticulture and dental nursing.

Across all sectors, almost 9 out of every 10 apprenticeship employers hoping to achieve business benefits say that apprenticeships deliver – including 89% reporting that it has helped their organisation improve the quality of their product or service.

During National Apprenticeship Week, Skills For Health will be publishing a series of blogs from current and past apprentices that provide a real insight into what it means to be an apprentice in the healthcare sector.

In addition, their large collection of case studies show how healthcare employers large and small are successfully using apprenticeships to grow their own talent by developing a motivated, skilled and qualified workforce.
