University of Wolverhampton expands mental health nursing training provision

The University of Wolverhampton is growing the number of mental health nurses it trains through a new partnership with the Midlands Partnership Foundation NHS Trust (MPFT).

The link will boost the number of mental health nurses in Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Additional clinical placements have been secured enabling the University to train more students on its BNurs (Hons) Mental Health Nursing course.

Initially five extra students per intake will be able to join the course, with the next available intake being March 2020.

Alison Hay, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader (Mental Health Nursing) at the University, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for students to experience all that the University of Wolverhampton has to offer and to have placements within an excellent NHS Trust serving Shropshire and Staffordshire and beyond. We are delighted to be able to strengthen our partnership with the Trust more formally as we work together to build a highly skilled mental health nursing workforce.”

Caroline Llewellyn, Head of Nursing: Professional Education & Development at MPFT said: I am delighted that we are able to build upon our existing relationship with the University of Wolverhampton to support nursing students in practice across our services both in Staffordshire and Shropshire.  The Trust offers a wide variety of high quality learning opportunities and strives for excellence in care in all of its services, supporting and developing the workforce of the future will be both a pleasure and a privilege.”

The Mental Health Nursing course at the University of Wolverhampton is delivered by subject experts with extensive clinical experience.  Upon successful completion of the course students can register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to practise as a Registered Mental Health Nurse working in a range of diverse health and social care settings.
