Ex-care home boss guilty of mistreating patients

A former care home boss was found guilty today of mistreating two elderly patients.

Howard Griffiths, 53, of Ebbw Vale, South Wales, was cleared of eight other charges listing individual patients at the home.

Griffiths, a qualified psychiatric nurse with more than 30 years of experience, had been night manager at Rozelle Nursing Home in Abergavenny.

He denied all 10 charges against him and told a jury at Newport Crown Court he “loved” the people in his charge.

Griffiths was found guilty of mistreating Derek Gregory, 85, a senile dementia sufferer and Dorothy Holland, 72, who suffered from vascular dementia.

The jury had heard that Griffiths would frequently heave Mr Gregory out of his wheelchair while standing on his feet.

Sentencing was adjourned until August 16 for reports.
