Over 500 old folk faced abuse

More than 500 cases of old people being abused were reported in Caerphilly county borough last year. 254 cases involved people aged over 65 and 29 per cent of the abuses were physical, 38 per cent neglect, 27 per cent emotional and psychological, 20 per cent financial and six per cent sexual.

Cabinet Member for Social Services, Judith Pritchard, said “It’s a sad fact that abuse against the elderly does happen, often by people that they know and trust.”

The council’s protection of vulnerable adults team is organising a World Elder Abuse Awareness day on Monday June 15 at Blackwood Methodist Church, Blackwood Town Centre, from 10am to 4pm.

“This event will be a good opportunity for us to engage the community and raise awareness about this important issue,” said Ms. Pritchard. “Any form of abuse is a violation of our basic human rights, it’s only right that something is done to stop it.”

Members of the Public as well as practitioners are encouraged to attend the event.

The POVA team and social services staff will be on hand throughout the day to provide support and advice to anyone with concerns.

If you suspect an elderly person is being subjected to any form of abuse contact the Adult Services Duty Information team on 0808 1002500.
