Cancer Advice Centre Work Starts

A turf-cutting ceremony is to be held at the site of Wales’ first Macmillan Information Centre in Wrexham.

The centre, at the town’s Maelor Hospital, will provide cancer patients, their families and carers with information and support.

The £150,000 project is a joint venture between Macmillan Cancer Support, the local Shooting Star Appeal and the North Wales NHS Trust.

Macmillan said it was “delighted” the first unit would be based in Wrexham.

It is hoped the unit, which will advise patients and their families on a wide range of subjects including how to claim relevant benefits, will be completed by Christmas.

It will be built close to the hospital’s Shooting Star Unit, named after the charity initially set up to establish a cancer care unit.

Cath Lindley, of Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales said: “Whatever stage of the cancer journey people are on, receiving the correct information at the right time about cancer is vital.”
