Mentally-ill Man Died From Attack

A Swansea man died after suffering a schizophrenic attack at his parents’ house. Swansea coroner Philip Rogers returned a narrative verdict on Paul Evans, of Clas-yr- Onnen, Waunarlwydd.

Mr Evans lost consciousness while being subdued during a schizophrenic attack on January 10, last year. He died a day later at Morriston Hospital.

An inquest into his death heard that a disturbance started in the house at about 4am with Mr Evans howling and screaming uncontrollably and causing damage to the house.

After his father and neighbours tried to restrain him without success, the police were called in an attempt to pacify him.

Recording a narrative verdict, Mr Rogers said police had used restraints and that Mr Evans banged his head on the floor. An ambulance was called.

He said: “By the time the ambulance arrived, the deceased had stopped breathing. CPR was carried out by paramedics.

“The deceased responded to CPR and was transferred to intensive care at Morriston Hospital but his condition deteriorated and he died at 5.30am on January 11, 2006.”
