Robison announced as keynote speaker at conference on elderly care

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing & Sport, Shona Robison MSP, has been confirmed as keynote speaker of a conference exploring the care of older people in Scotland.

The ‘Care of Older People in Scotland: 4th Annual Conference’ will take place at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange on March 3, 2016.

The focus of this conference is on how, against the backdrop of Scottish Government health and care initiatives, we deliver health needs with dignity for our older people consistently across Scotland.

The conference will explore the challenge of meeting the needs of Scotland’s older people and delivering greater consistency and equality across Scotland. It will discuss the long term preventative approach to good health for older people in parallel with delivering immediate care needs in order to ensure that meeting future health and care demand does not become an impossible task.

The objective of all partners in health and social care is excellence and consistency in the delivery of care for older people. In this context speakers will discuss the factors which are drivers toward quality and those which are enablers of the delivery of quality. They will examine how changing expectations on standards and quality are meeting with rising demand and costs and they will discuss what, set against those challenges, the promotion and development of excellence in care for older people should look like.

Themes to be addressed will include:

  • Strategy for excellence in older people care
  • The care provider’s perspective
  • The consultation on National Care Standards
  • Importance of effective advocacy and representation
  • Impact of the Law, Human Rights and precedents in care
  • How developments in data and digital technology can enable excellence
  • Listening to care givers and care consumers as drivers of improvement
  • The importance of prevention in promoting positive health and empowerment
