Scottish youth call for end to alcohol advertising in public places

Scotland’s Youth Commission on Alcohol is calling on the Scottish government to put an end to the advertising of alcohol in public places.

The commission — made up of young people aged between 14 and 22 from across Scotland — is also pushing for more alcohol education in the school curriculum and action to encourage alcohol-free leisure and lifestyle choices for adults so children don’t learn to see regular alcohol consumption as normal.

The recommendations will be formally handed to public health minister Shona Robison on Tuesday and the government will consider them as part of its Framework for Action for Alcohol.

Youth commissioner Ryan Leith said: “We based our recommendations on the evidence we received from alcohol experts and Scottish people. There isn’t one answer so we have come up with a number of key approaches to improve Scotland’s relationship with alcohol.”
