Social work boss accused of dumping secret dossier told he can return to his job

A SOCIAL work boss accused of stealing a secret file and leaving it on a shelf in Tesco has been told he can return to work. Manager John Brittan, 41, al legedly took documents containing information about a social work client.

Police investigated claims that he was trying to set up one of his colleagues by getting them blamed for losing the file and sacked.

The documents were placed among magazines on a shelf in Tesco in Maryhill, Glasgow.

But Brittan was al legedy caught on CCTV leaving the file. He was arrested by police and suspended from work with Glasgow City Council.

However, after an inquiry, criminal charges against him have been dropped and he will return to work as a manager in a different department.

Brittan lives in Possil, near the North Glasgow Community Health and Care Partnership in Maryhill where he worked.

Glasgow City Council said: “An incident took place which has been fully investigated and the matter is now closed. We don’t comment on any detail on internal disciplinary matters.”

Crown Office officials refused to explain why the criminal case was dropped.

A spokesman said: “A report was submitted to the procurator fiscal in Glasgow concerning a 41-year-old man in connection with an incident on October 23, 2008.

“Summary proceedings were raised charging theft and, after several procedural hearings, a trial diet was fixed for October 27, 2009 in Glasgow SheriffCourt.

“During the proceedings, the fiscal received further information concerning the accused.

“As with all cases, the Crown had a continuing duty to review what action was appropriate in this case in light of all the available facts and circumstances.

“After careful consideration, the procurator fiscal instructed that the proceedings should be discontinued.”
