Police probe at Dingwall care home after death of resident

A Ross-shire care home is at the centre of a police investigation following the death of an elderly resident. Police confirmed yesterday that inquiries are ongoing at Wyvis House care home, in Station Road, Dingwall.

Officers were called to the property after Jamesina “Minnie” MacKenzie, who was in her late 80s, became ill and was admitted to the County Community Hospital at Invergordon.

Miss MacKenzie, a former veterinary surgeon originally from Torridon, Wester Ross, died on May 31 shortly after her admission to the hospital. Her funeral was held yesterday.

It is understood that police have interviewed management and staff to try and establish the circumstances leading to Miss MacKenzie’s death.

Highland Council’s social services department is contacting all residents and their families explaining the situation.

Yesterday a police spokesman said: “Northern Constabulary is carrying out an investigation at Wyvis House care home, Station Road, Dingwall.

“Police have liaised with the Care Commission and social services who are fully aware of the matter under investigation.

“Social services will be contacting all residents or their relatives by letter to provide information regarding the matter.”

A spokesman for RDS Healthcare, who took over the care home earlier this year, said it is run efficiently and the company takes pride in the service it provides.

He added: “I cannot say anything at the moment. We feel sympathy for this lady’s family and we are doing all we can to co-operate.”

Both the Care Commission and NHS Highland said they could not comment on the matter because it was a police investigation.

Miss MacKenzie had a successful career as a vet, including a spell as the chief veterinary officer in Queensland, Australia.
