Winners of Scotland’s accolades for social services announced in Dundee

The cream of Scotland’s social service teams received awards today (5 June 2009) which recognise the excellent work carried out every day. Social services are at the heart of our communities and the projects showcased at Care Accolades 2009 highlighted the difference these services are making across a range of services including palliative care, older people and children’s services and services for people with learning difficulties.

TV presenter, Kaye Adams, announced the winners at Scotland’s national Care Accolades awards ceremony at Dundee’s Caird Hall. Kaye has hosted the event since it began in 2004:

“These aren’t just any awards. The Care Accolades are special. I have had the privilege of hosting them for some years now and I have seen at first hand the positive difference social service workers make to the lives of people in Scotland every day. This is an opportunity to celebrate their excellent work and to witness the tremendous morale boost that being shortlisted or winning an Accolade has on individuals who carry out some of the most difficult and challenging jobs in our community.”

Over 200 finalists, guests and representatives from across the social services sector gathered for the Care Accolades 2009 ceremony which is a joint initiative by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) and the Scottish Government.

Launched in 2004, the Care Accolades recognises, promotes and celebrates the outstanding initiatives and projects in social services across Scotland.  Guests at the Care Accolades included people who use social services, carers and workers from public, private and voluntary social service organisations.

This year the SSSC received a record 156 entries from local authority, voluntary and private social service agencies across Scotland.  Nineteen finalists were selected by the judging panel covering seven categories.

Garry Coutts, Convener of the Scottish Social Services Council and Chair of judging panel said: “It is a tremendous achievement to receive this award and I would like to congratulate the winners of this year’s Care Accolades and all of the finalists who have shown excellence and innovation.  Their hard work and commitment to our sector continues to improve the lives of others.

“The Care Accolades gives us the opportunity to celebrate successes, recognise achievements and share good practice across the whole of the social services workforce.”

Minister for Children and Early Years Adam Ingram said: “In social care services a fundamental resource in this complex and difficult area is the workforce. Every day thousands of families are supported and thousands of lives improved by the work you do. The Care Accolades gives us the opportunity to highlight and celebrate the excellent work you do day in day out. This year saw a record number of applications for the accolades and today’s finalists and winners – as well as all those who applied – rightly deserve the highest praise. I am sorry I cannot attend today’s ceremony but wish everyone a successful day.”
