Deadline fast approaching for managers of care home and adult day care services

Care home and adult day care services managers registering with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) have until 31 May 2009 to get their applications submitted to meet the Scottish Government deadline for required registration.

From 30 November 2009 the Scottish Government will bring in required registration for managers of care home services for adults and mangers of adult day care services.  Employers in these services will be committing an offence if their managers are not appropriately registered with either the SSSC or another relevant workforce regulator by this date.

For those registering with the SSSC, applications must be received by 31 May 2009 to be processed in time for the 30 November 2009 deadline. Applications received after this date are unlikely to be processed in time.

The SSSC opened the parts of the Register for managers of care home services for adults and managers for adult day care services in January 2006. The Regulation of Care (Fitness of Employees in Relation to Care Services) (Scotland) (No2) Regulations came into force on 30 April 2009 which means that it will now become a requirement for managers in these services to be registered. The Scottish Government has already made registration a requirement for social workers and social work students. Residential child care workers will be required to register from 30 September 2009. This requirement will also be introduced for other workers in care home services for adults and day care of children services over the next few years.

Regulation of the social care, children’s and young people’s workforce recognises the vital jobs they do on a daily basis.  Registration with the SSSC means that managers of care home services for adults and managers of adult day care services will be required to gain qualifications that contain both practice and management elements.  Registrants must also provide evidence of good character, agree to abide by the Code of Practice for Social Service Workers and undergo an enhanced disclosure check.
