PHA urge parents to talk about alcohol and drugs

In light of recent events, the Public Health Agency (PHA) is reminding parents across Northern Ireland about the importance of talking to their children about the risks associated with alcohol and drugs.

The PHA is encouraging parents to point out the dangers of intoxication to their children and to encourage them to look after their personal safety and that of their friends.

There is an unhealthy drinking culture in Northern Ireland and underage drinking is just one aspect of this culture.

Drugs and Alcohol Lead with the PHA, Owen O’ Neill, stressed that parents have a huge influence on their children’s attitudes towards drugs and alcohol.

“We would like parents to talk to their kids about the serious consequences of underage drinking. If their child is old enough, we would like parents to encourage responsible use of alcohol, should they choose to drink.”

O’ Neill warned that intoxication can lower inhibitions and allow young people to do things that would be out of character.

“Drinking can increase your confidence and make you more likely to take risks you would normally avoid. It is important to let our young people know that you can have a great night out without drugs or alcohol.”

“We urge parents to highlight the dangers to the children about getting caught up in behaviour such as drinking games, which have the potential to quickly increase consumption of alcohol and this can be highly dangerous.”
