600 Phones Seized From Mountjoy Prison Inmates Last Year

More than 600 mobile phones were seized from inmates at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin last year. There are fears that the phones are being smuggled into the jail, so convicted criminals can direct crime from inside the prison.

There is evidence that a number of gangland killings may have been ordered from prisoner’s cells. In response, prison officers have been given special electronic devices to track the use of mobiles.

It comes as Garda investigate a smuggling scam at three Dublin jails – which led to the arrest of five prison officers last week.
