MH Treatment More Likely For Women

Women are generally more likely to be prescribed drug treatment by GPs while men are more likely to be referred for specialist treatment, according to a report from the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI) on mental health.

According to Ms Annie Dillon, NWCI Spokesperson on Health, mental health provision requires a gendered approach to both policy and service provision in order to respond to women’s experience and needs.

Speaking at the Irish Association of Suicidology’s Annual Conference, she said this service should be women-centred, involve women, be responsive to needs, and recognise diversity.
