Woman faces court in assault case linked to youth jail ‘mistreatment’ probe

The first person to be charged by detectives investigating allegations of abuse and mistreatment of youngsters at a youth jail will appear in court today.

Rebecca Harold, 24, was charged with common assault by Kent Police in July and will appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court later.

Nine other people arrested over allegations at Medway Secure Training Centre (STC) in Rochester remain on police bail until September 21. Two others have been freed without charge.

The arrests came in the wake of an undercover BBC Panorama programme, aired in January, which went behind the scenes at the then G4S-run unit.

The Government later announced it would take over the running of the facility through the National Offender Management Service.

In February, G4S said it was selling its UK children’s services business, which includes 13 children’s homes and two STCs – Medway and Oakhill in Milton Keynes.

Harold, of Grecian Street, Maidstone, is on bail.
