New centre in Kidderminster to help recovery project grow

A NEW recovery and treatment centre in Kidderminster for people with alcohol and drug misuse problems aims to double the amount of people who leave the service with “positive results”.

The new Worcestershire Pathways to Recovery centre was opened in Coventry Street earlier this month by the leader of Wyre Forest District Council, Conservative councillor John Campion.

The Worcestershire Pathways to Recovery centre is run by health and social care charity Crime Reduction Initiatives (CRI), who were chosen to work with Worcestershire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust and Worcestershire PCT in April.

It is funded by Worcestershire Drugs and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT), which commissions the service for the county council.

Sue Davis, locality leader for Pathways to Recovery in Kidderminster, said: “We are very pleased. We need a positive environment around us and something that reflects how we feel about the service users.

“This building give us that which is important because we have a very strong philosophy on recovery based around crime reduction.

“This year [at our old building in New Road] we had 289 people leave with positive results. In 2012 I am looking for it to be 500. We want to double it.”

Positive results means people leaving drug free or been judged to have made “very good progress”.

Organisers claim the partnership between the different organisations will help make the centre a success.

Mr Campion said: “We have always had this kind of service in the county. It is not a case that we have an epidemic but we need to help and support people.

“This centre focuses on the underlying problem, it’s not just about a quick fix, instant treatment.

With all the services lined up and working together I hope this can make a real difference to people’s lives.”

Anne McKay, commissioning manager for Worcestershire DAAT, said: “The investment in new facilities will really make a difference to the lives of people in Kidderminster.”

The Pathways to Recovery service centre is at 109-111 Coventry Street in Kidderminster.
