Calderdale Council: Vulnerable adults to lose free social care

About 700 “least needy” vulnerable adults in Calderdale will lose their free care as the council lifts its social care threshold from those with “low” needs to those with “moderate” ratings.

The authority is also raising social care charges and home meals service prices as part of a drive to cut spending by £15m this year, rising to £28m by 2013.

Only 149 job losses have been announced by the authority so far, but many more are expected.

Mental health services to schools are amongst the numerous youth services to be cut, and the council is one of several to have placed its entire library service under review.

No closures have been announced yet – but savings will have to be found in the years to come.
