Connexions workers to be hit hard in cuts to Birmingham children’s services

Connexions workers are set to bare the brunt of a swathe of job cuts in children and young people’s services revealed by Birmingham City Council.

The council has issued a section 188 redundancy notice saying that around 430 jobs are at risk.

Public sector union GMB says that Connexions is likely to be the worst affected area but job losses are also expected in children’s homes.

Tony Hughes, GMB branch secretary, said: “These cuts will cause a severe detriment to the lives of children in Birmingham and will affect the most vulnerable young people.”

GMB regional organiser Roger Jenkins added: “This is the worst time to cut these vital services and leave our young people with no hope or no direction. GMB members within the Connexions service provide a vital role in our community and any cuts will be felt across the city.”

Birmingham City Council has not yet responded to the proposed cuts.
