21 jobs to go as Camberwell care home closes

Eighteen elderly residents will have to find a new home before Christmas, as a Camberwell care home will shut due to the recession.

The closure of privately run Evergreen Care Centre, in D’Eynesford Road, will also result in the loss of 21 jobs.

A spokesman for Excel Care Holding, which runs the home, confirmed that consultation about the planned closure had begun and all parties involved were being contacted.

He added: “The home, which was previously managed by Age Concern until May 2004, is no longer considered a viable concern, and closure for a period of time is necessary, for the company to review the needs of the community for residential or nursing care and how best to adapt to the changing service needs identified.”

The spokesman for Excel Care confirmed discussions were ongoing with Southwark Health and Social Services, and said they would deal sensitively with the individual needs of all patients resident there.

A UNISON spokesman said: “The workers in the home will be losing their jobs just before Christmas. The management have promised they will relocate staff where arrangements can be made. We look forward to that happening.”

Regarding the staff, the company running the home stated they had been advised on terms of employment and implications of redundancy.
