East Yorkshire care home worker jailed over theft

A care home worker from East Yorkshire has been jailed for 10 months after emptying the bank account of a pensioner she was looking after.

Anne Morris, from Hook, withdrew almost £9,500 from the account of Violet Barnes when she was employed at St John’s Rest Home in Melrose last year.

The 22-year-old snatched a bank card and Pin documents from the bedroom of the lady in her 80s.

Between August 13 and December 3 she withdrew a total of £9,440 from cash machines in the area.

Selkirk Sheriff Court was told that Morris’s spending spree only ended when the account ran out of cash.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond said: “This was a mean and despicable offence committed in a position of trust.”
