Notts Carer Stole £10K From Patients Spared Jail

A Carer who stole almost £10,000 from adults with learning difficulties has been spared jail. Elaine McCarthy, 32, worked at Gregory House II in Mansfield Road, Carrington, where she had access to residents’ bank cards and pin numbers to help them with their money.

Between October 2005 and June this year, she used four residents’ cards to withdraw £9,730 at cash machines across the city, Nottingham Magistrates’ Court heard.

One resident had £7,130 drained from her account, while another lost £1,480.

McCarthy, of Peel Street, in the Arboretum area, was suspended as soon as the thefts came to light.

District Judge Morris Cooper said: “It is difficult to imagine a meaner sort of offence than taking money off people in that sort of position.”
