Fresh Rioting Rocks Youth Institute

Rioting has broken out for the second time in three days at a young offenders’ institute. A police spokesman said trouble at Deerbolt young offenders’ institute in County Durham was brought under control in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A wing of the centre, near Barnard Castle, was taken over by inmates on Tuesday evening. Another wing was destroyed by 40 inmates on Sunday, when four prison officers were injured in an eight-hour disturbance.

Inspector Tony Bell of Durham Police said: “The situation is under control. “All the inmates are safe, there is no one barricaded in and they are all under the control of the Prison Service. The disturbance was being dealt with by the Prison Service. Police were in attendance to see if any criminal offences were being committed. No arrests were made but it will be the subject of further investigation and arrests may be necessary.”

The Home Office confirmed there was an incident at the institution but would not release any more details.

It is believed the most recent riot lasted for five hours.
