New Rules for Care Homes

People are to get a fair deal from care homes, thanks to new rules announced today by Care Services Minister Ivan Lewis. The new regulations will require care homes to provide clear information on terms and conditions, including fees, before a resident moves in. This will help families choosing a care home on behalf of a loved one when they are frail or vulnerable.

They will come in to effect in July and are a positive response to an Office of Fair Trading report criticising lack of price transparency in the sector. Homes will also be asked to provide transparent information on the timing of and reasons for any increases in fees.

Speaking at the Quality Care for Older People conference, Care Services Minister Ivan Lewis said: “Moving into a good quality care home is a positive option for many people. But choosing to move can be a trying time for a family so it is imperative that people have as much information as possible to help make a decision.

“We expect to know how much our groceries cost – we should be able to demand the same service for something as fundamental to a person’s quality of life as what they can expect from their care home. I am pleased we have implemented the OFT’s suggestions.”

This work demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improving the range of social care services provided locally and to drive up standards.
