Care worker appears for trial charged with murder of baby found dead in Hampshire park

A care home worker has appeared for trial charged with the murder of a newborn baby whose body was found in a park.

Babita Rai has been accused over the death of the un-named infant, who was discovered in Manor Park (pictured), Aldershot, Hampshire, on May 19 2017.

The child, who was referred to by police as Baby M, had suffered blunt force injuries to the head and is believed to have died within six hours of being born.

The 24-year-old defendant, who is from Nepal, appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Tuesday.

Rai, of Reeves Road in Aldershot, Hampshire, denies charges of murder and infanticide.

A jury were sworn in and the trial is expected to be opened by the prosecution on Wednesday.
