Man arrested after hospital worker stabbed multiple times with pair of scissors

A 27-year-old man has been arrested after a member of nursing staff was attacked with a pair of scissors in a hospital A&E.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at Newham University Hospital in east London at around 5.40am on Wednesday.

The 50-year-old female hospital worker suffered multiple stab wounds but is in a non-life threatening condition, Scotland Yard said.

A man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH) at the scene, and remains in police custody.

Shane DeGaris, deputy group chief executive of Barts Health NHS Trust, said: “A member of nursing staff in the emergency department at Newham Hospital was stabbed by a member of the public while at work early this morning.

“The victim was treated in the emergency department, admitted to a ward and has since been discharged home.”

He added: “This was a shocking and senseless attack on a member of staff doing their duty.

“The Trust condemns any form of violence and aggression against our dedicated and hard-working staff.

“In the light of this incident we are reviewing security at all our hospitals to ensure the safety of all our staff and patients at all times.”
