West Midlands carers admit care home neglect charge
Two carers have admitted neglect after an 85-year-old resident fell as they put her to bed.
Sabrina Duncan and Benter Ouma admitted acting in a grossly negligent manner at Birmingham Crown Court, said West Midlands Police.
Norah Boyle suffered a head injury as she fell from a hoist as the two workers were putting her to bed.
However, the couple then made up a story about how Ms Boyle came by her injuries and delayed calling an ambulance to The Green Nursing Home on September 5, 2013.
Ms Boyle, who needed around the clock care following a brain injury sustained in another fall in 2006, died in hospital 23 days after the incident.
Detective Sergeant Victoria Lee said: “This is a tragic case of abuse by two trained members of staff who should have known better.
“The mental capacity act was created to protect victims such as Norah and give people without capacity a voice.
“Both defendants pleaded guilty to neglect and ill-treatment which will finally enable the family to have the closure they need.”
She added: “This protracted in-depth investigation has lasted 18 months which has been very traumatic for the family.
“With the legislative changes to the new Care Act 2014, I am confident that this has demonstrated that abuse and neglect will not be accepted and perpetrators will be held to account.”
Duncan, 40, of Shartlands Close, Cotteridge in Birmingham and 31-year-old Ouma, of Poplar Road in Bearwood, Warley, West Midlands, admitted their guilt on Monday.
The pair were bailed and are due to be sentenced on August 7.
