£600K cash boost for Edinburgh respite services

More community short breaks are to be provided to carers, community care groups and older people in Edinburgh. An extra £606,000 investment has come from the City of Edinburgh Council as they increase respite services across the Capital.

The services are much in demand because they provide regular breaks from caring for relatives and help older people and adults with a learning disability to gain confidence, new skills and maintain their independence.

Breaks range from a few hours to a few weeks, depending on the type of break, the needs and wishes of people using the service and their families, and the amount of time the community carer is able to offer.

Councillor Paul Edie, Health and Social Care Convener for the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “Investing an extra 606,000 in respite services demonstrates our commitment to helping those in need in Edinburgh.

Short breaks provide a valuable and much needed service to people across the city. Caring for someone is a demanding, and difficult job. Both the cared for person and their families can benefit immensely from a short break.
